More independent artists are ditching ad budgets in favor of research-backed storytelling, and Kelly Wong is one of the strategists leading that charge. As a content creator, director, and founder of Music Marketing Memo (MMM), she’s built her reputation on growing artist audiences through content strategy grounded in research rather than paid promotion.
Wong’s process begins well before any filming happens. She leans on SEO and search-trend analysis to pinpoint what audiences in a specific genre are searching for, where the content gaps exist, and which overlooked story angles have real potential to take off. That research shapes every campaign — built around genuine audience interest and the artist’s authentic identity, rather than a trend they’re just following. She then runs the entire creative process solo: storyboarding, directing, shooting, and editing.
The results speak for themselves. When jazz pianist Yoko Miwa wanted to connect with a younger, Asian jazz audience — a demographic the genre has historically struggled to reach — she enlisted Wong’s help. Wong studied what that audience was engaging with online and crafted a short-form video approach around it. In just two months, with no paid marketing at all, Miwa saw her Instagram and Facebook following climb 10%, alongside a 152.6% increase in engagement.
In another project, Wong teamed up with artist D’Chrome Foster on a release campaign that pulled in over 30 million organic views. After digging into Foster’s audience, she wrote and produced a four-part scripted video series exploring the story behind the track, releasing it before the single itself to build hype. It’s one of multiple campaigns where Wong’s organic, narrative-driven method has reportedly beaten out standard paid-media performance.
“Artists don’t need a bigger budget — they need to be pointed in the right direction to come up with content ideas that actually speak to their audience,” Wong said. “SEO is the fastest way to find that direction, because it shows you what your audience already cares about. Once you know that, you can meet them where they are and build content that’s authentically them, all while keeping a clear, purposeful content calendar.”
She started MMM after repeatedly seeing the same issue in the independent music world: talented artists with real commercial potential but no strategy for reaching the right listeners. MMM’s approach combines deep market research — studying the competitive landscape and audience search behavior — with content built around each artist’s genuine story and the niche they can claim in their genre. The focus isn’t maximum reach, but building a loyal, lasting fanbase.
About Kelly Wong
Based in New York, Wong works as a writer, director, and content strategist. Her road into music marketing started with classical training, where she earned honors like the Steinway Young Artists Competition and the Crescendo International Music Competition. During the pandemic, she began writing and producing her own music, which led her to Berklee College of Music to further develop her songwriting and production skills. There, she worked alongside talented artists releasing music without any promotional plan, while also gaining experience in Berklee’s media relations and marketing departments — work that revealed how tightly content and press need to align for an artist’s story to resonate. That insight became the foundation for MMM, where she now builds narrative-driven strategies to connect artists with the right audiences at the right time.
Wong is available for interviews on trends in independent artist marketing and short-form content.
