Post Malone’s Path From SoundCloud to Mainstream Stardom

Post Malone performing on stage, representing his path from SoundCloud artist to mainstream stardom

Post Malone’s career began with “White Iverson,” a song he recorded and uploaded to SoundCloud in 2015 while still largely unknown, blending trap production with a melodic, half-sung delivery that didn’t fit cleanly into hip-hop or pop categories. That genre ambiguity drew skepticism from parts of the hip-hop community early on, but it also turned out to be exactly what made him hard to categorize — and hard to ignore — as streaming platforms increasingly rewarded genre-blending music.

Stoney (2016) and beerbongs & bentleys (2018) built out that sound further, and the latter became one of the best-performing albums of the streaming era, with singles like “Rockstar” and “Psycho” dominating charts for extended stretches. Hollywood’s Bleeding (2019) continued the run, and by that point his commercial numbers had made him one of the most consistently successful artists in music, regardless of the ongoing critical debate about where exactly his music fit genre-wise.

The more surprising turn came later: Austin (2023) leaned toward a more stripped-back, pop-rock-influenced sound, and F-1 Trillion (2024) was an outright country album, complete with collaborations with major Nashville figures — a pivot that could have looked like a gimmick but was received with more genuine critical respect than expected, partly because his melodic instincts translated cleanly into the genre.

His path is a clear example of how the streaming era’s blurring of genre lines created space for an artist who never fit neatly into hip-hop, pop, rock, or country to succeed across all of them without abandoning his core audience along the way.
