Every scene has bands that play it safe, and bands that refuse to. Rome’s State of Crowding firmly belong to the second group. Formed three years ago from the ashes of an 80s thrash metal band, the five-piece has taken that old-school intensity and pushed it somewhere new, building a crossover metal sound where heavy guitar riffs collide with rap delivery and funk grooves.
That history shapes everything about them. There’s a particular hunger in a band that has rebuilt itself rather than started from scratch. State of Crowding carry the speed and aggression of thrash in their DNA, but they’ve opened the doors wide. The funk gives their songs a swing that pure metal often lacks, and the rap edge sharpens the vocals into something direct and confrontational.

The lineup behind that sound is tight and well balanced. Marco Ricci fronts the band on vocals, moving between rap-driven verses and full-throated metal with ease. Salvatore Mileto drives everything from behind the kit, while Fabio Jacquier and Francesco Santoro form a twin electric guitar attack that builds a thick, layered wall of sound. Paolo Pellegrini holds it all together on bass, locking in the grooves that give the band its bounce.
What really sets them apart is what they choose to say with all that power. Their lyrics take on social hardship and inequality, the quiet pressure of societal conditioning, and the mental health struggles so many people carry in silence. The heaviness isn’t just style. It’s the weight the songs are describing.
That theme is written all over their album Point of No Return, released in April 2026 and available on all major streaming platforms and on CD. The cover says it before a note is played: a skull with a maze for a brain, rising over a faceless crowd. It’s a striking picture of a mind trapped by the pressure of the masses, which is exactly the territory the record explores. Even the band’s name plays into it.

The album has travelled well beyond Italy. State of Crowding have appeared in the top ten charts of several radio stations in the United States and the United Kingdom, and in September they hit the very top. Their track “Get Off Your Mask” landed at number one on the Dangerous Dawgs Show’s Top 10 Songs of the Week on Wild Dogs Radio for the week of 14 September 2026.
Back home, the stage has been their proving ground. In 2026 the band took on Emergenza Live, the international contest for emerging bands, playing rounds at Rome’s Wishlist Club on 2 April and again on 17 May. Their run took them all the way to the Lazio regional final at the Orion Arena in Ciampino, one of the region’s most important live venues and a major stage for musicians coming up through the scene. There, State of Crowding placed third, a strong result in a competition packed with new talent.
The summer kept them busy. On 11 June they played Traffic Live alongside progressive metal act Reflected Curse and stoner doom band King Funeral, and on 4 July they returned to the stage at Alvarado Street, sharing the bill with King Funeral again and Messaggi Effimeri. Line-ups like these show where State of Crowding sit in Rome’s heavy scene: right in the middle of it, holding their own among bands from every corner of metal.

Live is where all of this makes the most sense. The riffs land harder, the grooves move the room, and the messages hit with real force. Fans in the Rome area will get another chance to see it on 8 November, when State of Crowding play Pank Rabbit in Frascati alongside Time Is Relative. Doors open at 21:00 and entry is free.

Three years in, State of Crowding sound like a band that knows exactly who it is. They’ve honoured their thrash roots without being trapped by them, found a voice for the issues that matter, and started reaching listeners across borders. With Point of No Return out in the world and a number one chart spot under their belt, this is a band worth keeping firmly on your radar.
